ABOUT:
Therin Pethers is a London Based artist whose work is said to inhabit a cross-medium third-space. Her work borders on the edges of prose and visual representation. She works with particular emphasis on the act of gathering and the study of etymology. Objects are revered; attention given to their placement within both allegorical and tangible spaces. There is a dedicated use and weaving of organic materials into the narrative of her work which is often juxtaposed by the appropriation of found objects.

ARTIST STATEMENT:

My current practice resides in the study of semiotics and relies prominently on the act of curation. Focusing on epistemology, the work aims to trace both linear and non-linear narratives resulting in an archive of visual 'prose'. The work consists of installation, drawing, curation, sculpture and other cross-disciplinary practices; gathering, writing, sound recording etc.
Described as having been excavated, the works often appear emergent rather than resultant of the hand. I aim to approach the work as if I have found it, dug it up. Disjointing the anticipated actuality / linearity of the existing object.

I am interested in the translation of sacred to profane and, conversely, the imbibement of temporal, earth objects with an sanctity. Relics are, therefore, a motif returning throughout my work.

To make holy;
to dance with small feet.
We are dough held in the hands,
not yet risen.
